China said Friday that it supports efforts made by Iraq in safeguarding sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity as well as combating terrorism.
The spokesperson's office of the Foreign Ministry made the remarks when responding to US President Barack Obama's announcement of airstrikes against extremists in Iraq.
China takes an open attitude toward any action that ensures security and stability in Iraq on the precondition of respect for Iraq's sovereignty, the office said.
China hopes that Iraq can return to a stable and normal order at an early date, according to the office.
Obama said Thursday evening that he has authorized targeted airstrikes and airdrops of aid in Iraq.
