Heavy rain has hit many parts of Southwest China during the past two days, causing flooding in some areas. San-quan township of Chongqing experienced its most serious flood in a century, as about 260 millimetres of rain fell in the upper reaches of the Long-Yan river.

Road traffic, electricity supply and telecommunications have all been disrupted. Some farmland was flooded. Local authorities have set up a temporary shelter for those who lost their houses and dispatched tents, cotton quilts and other relief materials. So far, there's no report of casualties.

But in Guizhou province, 9 people have been killed, and another 9 are missing. Over 3,100 people have been relocated, and some houses have collapsed.

Weather authorities say Southwest China can expect more heavy rain today.
