US Secretary of State eyes US-China partnership

US Secretary of State John Kerry says improving cooperation with China is critical to maintaining stability and security in the Asia-Pacific. He was speaking in Hawaii, following an eight-day trip to Asia. Kerry outlined renewed priorities for much of the Obama administration's "pivot to Asia."

Kerry arrived in Hawaii after stops in Afghanistan, Myanmar, Australia and the Solomon Islands. At a Southeast Asia regional security forum in Myanmar over the weekend, Kerry unveiled a US proposal for a voluntary freeze on provocative actions. Kerry said he was pleased at some areas of current US-China cooperation. These include multinational talks on Iran's nuclear program, a shared interest in de-nuclearizing the DPRK and promoting calm in South Sudan. Kerry was also upbeat on US-Chinese initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation, as well as working on sustainable, clean energy options.
