More than 50 Chinese nationals have been detained by Philippine immigration authorities on suspicion of illegal stay. Immigration officers inspected the construction sites in Quezon city in great Manila region and Malabon district, as well as Carriedo markets in Quiapo district, believed to be one of the most Chinese inhabited areas in Manila.
The Philippine authorities are investigating if their stay complies with their visa privileges. The Chinese Embassy to the Philippines has lodged a solemn representation with the Philippines, urging impartial investigation. More than 20 Chinese citizens were arrested for illegal stay at the beginning of this year, but were later released without charge.
