The Beijing city government is planning to raise the only-child allowance and launch an insurance system to help families who have lost their only child, according to the Beijing News.
Fang Laiying, the director of Beijing Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning said that the only-child allowance is supposed to cover the risks faced by one-child families, but the 5-yuan-per-month allowance currently issued by the government is of no help.
Fang said that besides raising the allowance, they are also trying to establish a government insurance project to help those families who have lost their only child.
Beijing will be among the first batch of Chinese cities to explore and pilot this new insurance system.
