The Hong Kong Health Department said Thursday it has added Congo to its Ebola surveillance list after 24 suspected cases of haemorrhagic fever, including 13 deaths, were identified there from July 28 to Aug 18.
The World Health Organization believes the cases were unrelated to those in the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, where there have been a total of 2,615 Ebola cases, including 1,427 deaths.
The department called on people to avoid unnecessary travel to all affected areas, and to maintain personal and environmental hygiene.
