Yue Fu is a classy new jazz spot in one of Dangdai MOMA's swanky skybridges (the cool Lego-looking building where the Airport Expressway meets the Second Ring). It's the latest project from Leon Lee, the man behind Apothecary, Janes and Hooch and many more suave destinations. Despite Lee's booze-laden CV, however, this is most definitely a live music venue with a top drinks menu, rather than a bar with background jazz. The dozen or so small, round, candlelit tables are angled facing the stage and ushers with torches shepherd in latecomers to the show. This is a place to appreciate the bombastic sounds of Coltrane et al; chatterboxes will be shushed. If you're looking for a place to hang, the venue's 'tasting room' (basically a nice bar area) is opposite, which features a terrace with a great downtown view.
In terms of musical programming, Yue Fu will be booking experienced and up-and-coming jazz acts from Beijing and across the country. 'We exist to promote local jazz,' says owner Leon Lee. 'Since OT lounge closed [Lee's former jazz space] in 2008, jazz has been backsliding here. Plans to bring in international jazz artists, in collaboration with various embassies, are also in the works. The venue is open Wednesday to Sunday but live music is currently only on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
On the 'tasting' side of things, the menu is dominated by wine and whiskey flights, with only a handful of cocktails on the menu. There are a few wine options (four glasses 150RMB) and plenty of whiskey packages with names that begin 'introduction to…' (three glasses from 120RMB). The list is competitively priced and, as you'd expect from Lee, well curated. 'People think of me as a cocktail guy because I opened Apothecary, but my first love is music,' says Lee. Still, this guy knows his premium booze – that's for sure.
