Typhoon Fung-Wong lands in east China

Typhoon Fung-Wong made landfall in east China's Zhejiang province on Monday, bringing strong wind and downpour.

With speed reaching 28 meters per second, Typhoon Fung-Wong landed in coastal areas of Hepu Township, Xiangshan County of Ningbo City, at around 7:35 pm. It is currently moving north and northeast.

Fung-Wong has brought torrential downpours and powerful winds to cities of Ningbo, Zhoushan and parts of Shaoxing.

It is the 16th typhoon to hit China this year. It has struck Zhejiang with heavy rain and gales, which toppled 13 houses before landing. Rivers swelled and water levels for 14 reservoirs surged beyond warning lines.

A total of 250,517 people had been evacuated in the province by Monday noon, and more than 32,900 ships were called back to seek shelter at ports.

As of 8 p.m., average precipitation in Ningbo reached 100 millimeters, with 284 millimeters in Hepu, the local flood control bureau said.

In Xiangshan County, the typhoon-triggered rain has flooded cropland with an area of 120,000 mu (about 8,000 hectares). The local government has opened 456 shelters for residents.

Flights were canceled and 117 bus services were suspended in the port city. All primary schools in the city will be closed Tuesday morning.

Wenzhou city has also suspended classes for kindergarten, primary and middle school students on Monday.

Before the typhoon landed, ten villagers including two kids were trapped by floods while picking chestnuts in a mountain in Wenzhou. After four hours efforts, they were rescued by firefighters.

The provincial government has quickened efforts to prevent flood and waterlogging in cities and towns, especially underground garages and stores.

Last year, the eastern city of Yuyao in Zhejiang experienced its most severe flooding in a century after Typhoon Fitow made landfall in the coastal city.

Typhoon Fung-Wong is expected to hit Shanghai Municipality on Tuesday. Currently, nearly 100,000 people are on standby to prevent rain-triggered floods.

Fung-Wong made a landfall in Taiwan at around 10 am Sunday, forcing the cancellation of dozens of flights and ferry services.

Before that, it has killed at least ten people in the northern parts of the Philippines, including Metro Manila, the Philippines' state disaster management agency has said.
