Confucius Institute in Zambia marks 10th anniversary

The Confucius Institute in Zambia on Saturday joined many other countries in celebrating the 10th anniversary of the institute.

During the commemoration held here in the Zambian capital, Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Yang Youming said the establishment of the institute has opened up a window of opportunities for young Zambians to learn the Chinese language and the rapid development in China.

"At the same time, the young Chinese teachers and volunteers, have made friends here at the institute and got to understand the Zambian culture as well as the economic and social development of Zambia. The Confucius Institute has set up a bridge of friendship between the young peoples of the two nations," he said.

Zambia's Minister of Education John Phiri said his government appreciates the introduction of the Chinese language in Zambian schools and universities as well as the education many Zambians have continued to get in Chinese universities.

Although Confucius lived over 2,000 years ago, his influence has continued to grow stronger and stronger, said the minister.

"One of the most important tenets of Confucius is the belief that education philosophy is critical in molding engaged, enlightened and creative citizens who, through their learning, develop a passion for the vocation and contribute to society," he said.

According to him, the setting up of Confucius Institute has helped promote friendly relations with other countries and enhance the understanding of the Chinese language and culture.

The Confucius Institute in Zambia has been operating for the last four years and many types of Chinese courses have since been incorporated into the Zambian education system.

From the initial learning center at Zambia's highest learning institution, the University of Zambia (UNZA), the teaching of the Chinese language has been extended to two other universities as well as 10 public secondary schools.

So far, the number of students learning the Chinese language at the Confucius Institute at the University of Zambia alone has reached 4,700.
