Professional volunteer services are an irreplaceable necessity at international meetings such as APEC. More than 2,000 Chinese college students have answered the call to volunteer during the seven day conference.[Special coverage]
"Among the more than 8000 applicants, only one out of four will be finally chosen as a volunteer of this APEC Economic Leader' s Week," said Zhang Yifan, a junior student at the Central University of Finance and Economics, who works as a media center volunteer for the meeting.
According to Cui Jie, a staff member of the Beijing committee of Chinese Communist Youth League, during the APEC Economic Leaders'Week 2,280 volunteers from 24 collages including Peking University, Tsinghua University and Beijing Normal University, will provide services. They were selected from 8,323 applicants after two rounds of interviews.
"Aside from having English-speaking skills, volunteers also took training sessions to learn knowledge of APEC, language expressions, how to dress, basic psychological knowledge and first-aid," said Cui. "All those working for APEC have volunteer work experience with top events and have registered on Beijing Volunteer Federation."
According to Xinhua News Agency released in early November, Beijing launched an etiquette training program for volunteers serving at the APEC Economic Leaders' Week.
More than one third of the volunteers have college English certificates. Some can speak languages such as Japanese, Russian, French, German and Spanish, said the report.
The APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting will be held in Beijing from Nov 10 to 11. The APEC leaders' week also includes the final senior officials'meeting will be held on Nov 5 to 6 and the 26th ministerial meeting from Nov 7 to 8.
