"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" dominated the world's second-largest film market, bringing in 167 million yuan (27.3 million US dollars) in its opening weekend.
Just like Transformers, "Turtles" has a large fan base thanks to cartoons of the same franchise, which were shown in China in the 1980s.
Luc Besson's sci-fi action movie "Lucy" came in second, earning 100.2 million yuan for the week ending Nov. 2, bringing its total to 227 million yuan after 10 days, according to a report from China Film News.
"The Maze Runner," a dystopian action adaptation, came in third with 86.4 million yuan.
"Kung Fu Jungle," a domestic action film starring Donnie Yen and Wang Baoqiang, came in fourth by earning 49 million yuan.
Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" rounded out the top five list with 36 million yuan. The superhero movie has earned an accumulated 575 million yuan in its four-week run.
