Three Hong Kong tourists died when their van collided with a truck and trailer unit near a holiday resort town in New Zealand's South Island, according to reports Friday.

The three, who were not named, were killed on State Highway 6, near Wanaka, at about 4:30 pm on Thursday, police said in a statement.

Radio New Zealand reported Friday the three dead, a 60-year-old man who was driving and two women passengers aged 61 and 56, were from China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Another passenger, a 59-year-old man, was in a stable condition in Dunedin Hospital.

The deaths have renewed calls for overseas tourists to take a test before they are allowed to drive on New Zealand roads.
