A senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has called on Party officials to respect the law and wield their power lawfully.

A member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Liu Yunshan made the remarks Friday at an autumn semester gathering at the Party School of the CPC Central Committee.

"Whether Party officials can be role models in lawful governance directly affects the authority of our laws, the formation of legal order and the results of practices in the rule of law," said Liu, who is also president of the school.

Officials were told to measure their acts by the Constitution and to use lawful channels and procedures in all activities.

"Managing the relations between power and the law is the most frequent and immediate test for officials. Power must be wielded in a lawful, just and clean manner, and the boundary of power must be fully realized," Liu said.

Liu stressed that personal relations and benefits should always make way for public matters, and officials should voluntarily accept the supervision of the Party and the people.
