China's badminton legend Lin Dan lost to Indian youngster K. Srikanth 19-21, 17-21 in the China Open men's singles final here on Sunday, failing to make his 6th champion of the tournament.
Lin, who conceded points constantly after 4-4 in the first set, managed to regain the lead 16-15. But he played less aggressively when the score came to 19-19 and squandered chances.
The second set ran tightly from 5-5 to 15-15. Srikanth played more sharply, and Lin's pace was not as fast as before. Lin finally lost.
"I tried hard in this event. I believed I played well this time because I'm just recovering from the injury," Lin said. "The problem was I did not move fast enough today."
"I did not have myself trained systematically after the Asian Games. But I'm confident I'll be better in the coming 3-4 years," said Lin.
Srikanth told Xinhua that it was his first time to play in the final in Super-series.
"It seems my dream comes true," said the Indian youngster. "I'm so excited to play 100 percent and won my first title. I'd like to take it as a gift for my coach, for it is his birthday today."
Chinese pair Wang Xiaoli/Yu Yang, as the 5th seed of the women's doubles, won their fourth champion of China Open since 2011, by defeating their compatriots Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei, the second seed of the event. Chinese women keep the record of maintaining the title since 1992.
Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei beat the South Korean pair in the mixed doubles final, 23-25, 21-14 and 21-18.
Women's singles 6th seed Saina Nehwal from India beat Akane Yamaguchi from Japan 21-12, 22-20.
Men's doubles top seed Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong from South Korea made their second title in China Open by beating Chinese pair Chai Biao/Hong Wei, the eighth seed of the event, 21-14, 21-15.
