Two young men stopped two trains on the tracks just to take selfies, police confirmed on Tuesday, causing outrage among the public.
The Wuhu local railway police station investigated the case and released a statement saying that the two young men, one surnamed Guo and the other surnamed Sun, were walking past a train bridge near Limin East Road in Wuhu City, Anhui Province on the evening of Nov. 16 when Sun proposed that the two take photos on the railroad tracks.
When Sun saw the K101 train coming his way, he walked onto the track to stop the train and take a selfie. When a second train, the K1395, came their way, Sun stopped it as well and posed for Guo to take photos. The train managed to stop just 200 meters away from him.
The two posted their photos on an online message board later that day to show off, but they soon received furious criticism from fellow Internet users. The stunt sparked public outrage after local and national newspapers followed up on the story. Sun later realized they had done something terrible and deleted the posts.
Guo and Sun are students at Anhui Polytechnic University, but university officials said Sun had already dropped out of school when the incident occurred since he didn't register on time at the beginning of the term and didn't pay tuition fees. On the day he stopped the train, Sun went to a student dormitory to meet some old friends.
The supervising Hefei City Railway Police Department said the two men have been taken into custody for violating transportation safety rules. They will both receive warnings and be held for five days of administrative detention.
