Up in northern China, temperatures continue to drop, but business is heating up for many winter holiday resorts in Jilin province. And one of the most popular destinations is Chagan Lake, whose long tradition of ice fishing is reeling in new visitors.
A frozen lake and sub-zero temperatures can't deter people from gathering at Chagan Lake in Jilin province.
In a tradition that's been around for over 1,000 years, local fishers cut into the thick ice and cast their long nets deep into the frigid waters below.
Chagan means "holy water" in Mongolian, and the lake's purity has made it home to over 70 different kinds of fish as well as shrimp.
Though some enjoy just the spectacle of ice fishing, others are here looking for something extra to bring home for Christmas.
Locals have been hosting an annual winter fishing festival since 2001, with various cultural activities on offer. The event attracts more than 20-thousand visitors each year.
A blessing, and another way to enjoy the great outdoors over the winter season.
