Six firefighters were killed early Tuesday as they battled a blaze that engulfed a bowling center in northern Taiwan's Taoyuan City.
According to the fire department of Taoyuan, the fire was reported at 2:02 a.m. and a large number of firefighters were dispatched to put it out. Two people were rescued from the scene and sent to hospital.
Six men, all in their 20s, were killed in a burst of flames that caused the building to partially collapse, the department said.
The island's administrative authority issued a statement expressing deep condolences over the deaths and ordered to review firefighting measures, including personal equipment and training to help prevent similar incidents.
