Xi also called for authorities to step up environmental protection efforts as he visited the Dali Bai autonomous region in west Yunnan on Tuesday.

"Yunnan has a very good natural environment. We must treasure it and not let it go to ruin in our hands," he was quoted by Xinhua News Agency as saying.

He also said authorities should further improve water quality in Erhai lake, a renowned tourist attraction in the province.
