Rom-com 'Miss Granny' rules China's box office

"Miss Granny," a co-production between China and the Republic of Korea (ROK), ruled China's box office in the week ending Jan. 18 after grossing 122 million yuan (about 19.6 million U.S. dollars).

The rom-com, which debuted on Jan. 8, has so far brought total box office earnings of 249.9 million yuan.

"Seven's Son," a fantasy starring American actor Jeff Bridges and actress Julianne Moore, earned 103 million yuan since its debut on Jan. 16, China Film News reported Wednesday.

"Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb," the third movie in the Ben Stiller franchise, came in third, pulling in about 71 million yuan during the week. Its total box office stood at 266.5 million yuan since the opening day of Jan. 4.

The fourth spot went to acclaimed Hong Kong director Tsui Hark's "The Taking of Tiger Mountain," which raked 49.9 million yuan in the week. The 3D war film, which debuted on Dec. 23 and stars Tony Leung Ka Fai, has so far brought a total box office earning of 852.2 million yuan.

Rounding out the top-five list was the 3D version of "The Grandmaster" which stars Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi. The kung fu action pulled in about 30.3 million yuan in the week. Its ticket sales reached 61.1 million yuan since Jan. 8 when it was released.
