The World Health Organization (WHO) said the death rate from cancer in China has risen, and the country accounts for one-fourth of global deaths from various forms of the disease.
The WHO released the report on Tuesday, saying that 2.2 million people in China die from cancer each year.
"The growth of cancer in China is ferocious. We must do all that we can to prevent cancer, and spare as many Chinese families as possible from the heartache, pain, suffering and financial hardship of a cancer diagnosis," said Dr Bernhard Schwartlander, the WHO's China representative.
The WHO hoped to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection and treatment by releasing the report, as World Cancer Day fell on Wednesday.
"The difference in races and cancer spectrum make lung cancer, liver cancer and some other cancers with a minimum recovery rate the most common in China," Chen Wanqing, an official of China's National Cancer Center Registry (NCCR), said.
The NCCR's 2013 cancer report said about 600,000 people suffer in China from cancer every year. Lung cancer ranked the highest overall and most female cancer patients suffered from breast cancer.
"The government should pay more attention to the early detection of cancer by giving greater financial support to improve cancer detection and treatment. It should also encourage research into anti-cancer drugs to improve the recovery rate," Chen said.
To give up smoking and undergoing annual medical check-ups are helpful to avoid many cancers, Cheng Wenwu, the director of hospice care at the Shanghai Cancer Center, told the Global Times.
