China's foreign minister, Wang Yi, visited Yunnan province and met with local officials over measures to maintain stability in the China-Myanmar border and to safeguard Chinese people's lives and property following a bombing incident in the region, Yunnan Daily reported on Tuesday.

Wang also informed local officials of the central government's stand on issues on the China-Myanmar border on Monday, and shared ideas with senior local officials on developing Sino-Myanmar relations.

Wang's visit to Yunnan came days after a warplane from conflict-stricken Myanmar dropped a bomb and killed five Chinese citizens working in a sugar cane field in Lincang on Friday. The incident injured another eight.

Representatives from Myanmar reportedly proposed to give 70,000 yuan ($11,201) to the family members of each victim, sources close to the compensation negotiation told the Global Times.

The crossfire in north Myanmar's Kokong region near the border township of Nansan remains intense, a Global Times reporter at the scene said Tuesday. Chinese police have warned local residents to watch out for stray bullets.

"I hope China's efforts bring peace to Kokang so we can return home," a refugee from Kokang told the Global Times.

Wang has urged stability along the border, saying that "it serves the interests of both nations and peoples."

Peace negotiators of the Myanmar government and ethnic armed groups, in their first day of resumed peace talks in Yangon Tuesday, agreed to seek political ways to reduce the conflict in Kokang region and Kachin state, the Xinhua News Agency reported.
