Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co. Ltd. will recall 62,445 vehicles in China from April 1 due to a problem that could lead to erroneous warnings on the vehicles' dashboard displays that their anti-lock braking systems (ABS) won't work, China's top quality watchdog said Saturday.

The company's recall affects 58,949 Mondeo vehicles and 3,496 S-Max models produced between Oct. 5, 2007, and July 26, 2009, according to a statement issued by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

Due to faulty materials, the ABS control module motor may fail to function, which will result in an illuminated ABS warning indicator, while the ABS can still work, said the statement.

Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co. Ltd., a joint venture between the three companies, said it will inspect and replace hydraulic control units in the affected vehicles free of charge and that letters will be mailed to alert affected owners.

Consumers can call their respective dealers for a service appointment.
