Kweichow Moutai, China's biggest liquor producer by market value, has found that less than 5 percent of its products on the market are fake, Ji Keliang, honorary chairman and chief technical adviser of China Kweichow Moutai Distillery, said Sunday, refuting earlier media reports that 90 percent of Moutai liquor are counterfeits.
"The (90 percent fake) estimation went beyond market statistics," Ji told the Guizhou Provincial People's Congress Sunday.
Five percent is a worst-case estimation as the State-owned company based in Southwest China's Guizhou identified nearly 300 tons of fakes in the past three years, accounting for only 1 percent of its annual production, according to Ji.
