Faulty gear sticks force Subaru China recall

2012-12-15 12:45 Xinhua     Web Editor: Wang YuXia comment

Japanese automaker Subaru will recall 45,270 vehicles exported to China over defects in the gear stick guide rod, China's quality watchdog announced on Friday.

The company has decided to recall its imported Legacy and Outback models produced between June 3, 2010, and Sept. 8, 2012, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ).

Due to a change in the technique used to produce the guide rod, the gear stick in the recalled models comes loose more easily. The driver could push the rod from forward gear directly to reverse gear if the vehicle is operated at a low speed, posing a potential safety risk, the statement said.

Subaru China will install new guide rods for free, and will run checks on other parts of the gear stick and offer changes if necessary, the AQSIQ said.

The company said it will start to inform the car owners affected via email from Dec. 14.
