Sales of lottery tickets witnessed growth in December, rising 19.2 percent year on year to 26.8 billion yuan (4.25 billion U.S. dollars), China's Ministry of Finance said on Friday.
Of the total, welfare lottery sales reached 15.06 billion yuan, up 17.1 percent year on year. Sales of sports lottery tickets jumped 22.1 percent to 11.74 billion yuan, said a ministry statement.
It noted that 29 provincial-level regions saw lottery sales rise in December from a year earlier, with Zhejiang Province posting the largest increase at 527 million yuan.
In 2012, lottery sales hit 261.52 billion yuan, up 18 percent year on year.
The money raised through lotteries is divided between the jackpot, lottery management fees and lottery public funds, according to regulations. Enditem
