Alipay announced the online payment patterns of its users Tuesday, revealing shopping habits including extravagant personal spending that for some individuals runs in the millions annually.
According to data from Alipay, annual payment volume in Zhejiang Province made up 14.85 percent of the national total in 2012, with Guangdong, Shanghai and Beijing next.
It was reported that a single person in Wuxi, a city in Jiangsu Province, ranked only 26th in the city despite an astounding personal spending of 9.41 million yuan ($1.51 million).
Small cities showed powerful momentum in online payment. Over a thousand consumers from Sansha, China's most recently established island city, spent 465,400 yuan.
While many expect young people to have the strongest spending power when it comes to online shopping, older customers born before 1960 actually bought the most, reaching 31,000 yuan per person, approximately eight times the average consumption of those born after 1990.
The report also gave data based on astrological signs. Scorpio men and Aquarius women purchased the most online, spending 14,206 yuan and 15,095 yuan per person respectively.
In 2012, men in Tumushuke, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, bought the largest amount of goods for women, while the city where women bought the most for men was Jiayi city in Taiwan.
