China appliance world expo kicks off in Shanghai

The China Appliance World Expo, one of China's largest household and electrical appliance events, kicked off in Shanghai on Tuesday. High-tech appliances are the highlight of this year's event. Zhang Mengyuan shows us more.

Nearly 400 domestic as well as international home appliance companies are showcasing over 10 thousand new models at the expo. Many high technology products are attracting visitors coming from across the country as well as overseas.

"We are showing some new models, which are better and more intelligent in their performance, and have higher work efficiency, design and energy saving."

Besides high-tech, practicability is another focus for the products as more and more families in the countryside are using appliances such as air conditioners.

"Our brand positioning is producing good and durable products with lower price, and the major group of our consumers are the general public."

According to the summit forum held at the expo, the total industrial output value of China's household appliance in 2012 increased by about 12 percent from the previous year, despite the global economic downturn. Insiders say innovation is the main task in the development of the industry.

"We should focus on upgrading the industry, and invest more in technological innovation, to enhance the level and quality of our products."

The four-day expo will close its doors on Friday.
