The Eastern Chinese city Nanjing has banned the sale of live poultry, in the wake of the H7N9 bird flu outbreak. CCTV reporter Hu Chao has visited some of the city's poultry markets, to see what impact the ban is having.
Local poultry markets in Nanjing have been nearly empty since the municipal government officially banned all poultry trade on Saturday. Disinfections are carried out on a regular basis.
Poultry Vendor, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, said, "Restaurants don't want live poultry any more. It's been four days. The markets are empty. We can only keep the poultry at home."
In a downtown farmer's market in Nanjing, live poultry stalls were also cleaned and closed.
The municipal government of Nanjing initiated a fourth-level emergency action plan on April. 3rd. And all live poultry trade within the city has been banned. But most people say they don't feel quite concerned about the present epidemic situation.
Resident, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, said, "I don't worry about it. I don't eat any poultry these days. So far I think it's not a big issue."
Though people are not overly concerned, many have taken precautions against the virus. They report avoiding eating poultry, better personal hygiene, indoor disinfection and using more air ventilation.
