The Ministry of Industry and IT weighed on whether or not the most popular mobile app in China should start charging for its services. Rumours - deeply unpopular ones, that is - have run rife that the developers of mobile social networking app Weixin, or WeChat, will soon start implementing a fee plan.
The ministry says, it's up to the market - and that telecom operators and Internet companies should explore mutually beneficial tie-ups in China's booming mobile Internet market.
Zhang Feng, Spokesman of MIIT, said, "We support telecom operators and Internet businesses to grab the opportunities offered by mobile Internet. We also encourage them to solve related issues through market mechanisms, and develop a good interactive relationship."
