Apple dealers face fine

A total of 29 authorized distributors of US technology firm Apple Inc in Southwest China's Chongqing are being required by the Chongqing Administration for Industry and Commerce to change or delete 10 contract terms that infringe consumers' rights, news portal chinanews.com reported Monday.

The administration asked the distributors to delete terms like "Apple has the right to unilaterally change warranty service mode" and change terms concerning consumer privacy and a one-year warranty period for iPads, the report said.

The portal reported that the administration had asked 51 local Apple distributors to change or delete unfair contract terms, but 29 of them failed to meet the requirement, so the administration sent notices to them Friday instructing them to correct their practices within 10 days. Firms refusing to make corrections will be fined up to 10,000 yuan ($1,631).
