Malaysia's personal computer (PC) market recorded 898,000 units in the first quarter ended March 31, 2013, which was an increase of 18 percent sequentially, with Lenovo emerging as the top vendor, Internet Data Center(IDC) said.

IDC's Asia Pacific Quarterly PC Tracker issued on Thursday said, Lenovo emerged as the top vendor this quarter as it fulfilled a significant portion of the government's Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) project," it said.

IDC said that Lenovo, besides being a strong contender in the commercial space, was also working on increasing its consumer market presence.

"By slashing the prices of its mainstream models and high profile advertising, it is aggressively targeting the consumer segment, which has so far been more receptive to players like Acer and ASUS," the report pointed out.

The IDC report pointed out the Q1, 2013 was a lackluster quarter except for another major delivery of mininotebooks nationwide under the MCMC project.
