Chinese company Huawei Technologies, the world's largest telecom equipment maker by revenue, will set up a new R&D base in Yokohama, Japan in October, in hopes of developing its R&D capability for the smartphone industry, Japan's Kyodo News Agency reported Thursday.
Huawei declined to comment when contacted by the Global Times Thursday.
Analysts said that the move shows Huawei has a strong determination to expand internationally and Japan can provide a good platform with its advanced technology.
Media reported that Huawei moved up 36 places to 315 on the 2013 Global Fortune 500 list, with its revenue reaching $34.9 billion by the end of March 2013, up 10.6 percent year-on-year.
