People can make charitable donations using their smartphones or tablets after a joint project was launched on Wednesday by One Foundation, a charity founded by Chinese actor Jet Li, and Alipay, China's largest e-payments provider.
"One Foundation Monthly Donation" is a program embedded in the Alipay Wallet, a mobile application that allows users to electronically transfer funds via the Internet.
The default amount is 30 yuan (4.87 U.S. dollars) a month and users can set their own donation amount, which will be deducted monthly through their Alipay account.
"We can do a little every day to help others thanks to the progress of technology," said Li, who illustrated the donation process on his telephone at the launch ceremony.
Alipay is a subsidiary of the e-commerce giant Alibaba Group.
Contributors will be able to find out how their donations have been used through their cellphones in the future, said Fan Zhiming, president of the domestic business group with Alibaba's small and micro financial services unit.
One Foundation was originally founded by Li in 2007 as the Red Cross Society of China Jet Li One Foundation Project. It was registered on Dec. 3, 2010 as an independent public fundraising foundation in China.
