Most residents polled in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou oppose extending pension contributions, according to a survey.

The survey, conducted by Guangzhou-based Canton Public Opinion Research Center, interviewed 1,500 residents in November.

Findings showed that more than 52 percent of the residents opposed extending the length of pension contributions. And 30 percent were concerned about their actual pensions.

Only 31 percent of the residents said they were in favor of the measure, the survey said.

According to relevant labor regulations and rules, urban residents are required to pay pension contributions for 15 years before they can get a pension.

But new regulations and rules stipulated that those who pay for more years will be paid a bigger pension.
