Infiniti, Japanese automaker Nissan's luxury brand, views China as the most important market at present, a company representative said on Sunday.

In 2013, Infiniti sold 17,000 cars in China, 54 percent more than the previous year, Daniel Kirchert, managing director of Infiniti China, told the ongoing China Development Forum.

Infiniti's share of China's luxury car market is only 1 percent, lower than the 8 percent in the Unites States, but Kirchert believes sales will top 100,000 cars in five years.

"Although Infiniti is a brand that grew up in the United States, we have positioned China as our most important market," he said.

At present, China's luxury car market is dominated by German brands, including Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

China has remained the world's largest automobile market and producer for five consecutive years, with sales and production both exceeding 20 million units in 2013.
