Total foreign holdings of US Treasury securities continued to rise in March, indicating strong international demand for American government debt, the Department of Treasury said Thursday.
The rise has been on for eight months in a row.
Overall foreign holdings of US Treasury securities reached 5. 9494 trillion US dollars by the end of March, up from a revised 5.8901 trillion dollars by the end of February.
According to the Treasury International Capital report, China, the largest foreign holder of US Treasury securities, reduced its holdings by 800 million dollars, from 1.2729 trillion dollars in February to 1.2721 trillion dollars in March.
Japan, the second largest foreign holder of US government debt, also trimmed its holdings from 1.2108 trillion dollars to 1. 2002 trillion dollars.
