Total foreign holdings of U.S. Treasury securities continued to increase in April, indicating strong international demand for American government debt, the Department of Treasury said Monday.
Overall foreign holdings of U.S. Treasury securities reached $5.9609 trillion by the end of April, up from 5.9495 trillion dollars by the end of March, marking the ninth consecutive monthly increase, the Treasury Department said.
According to the Treasury International Capital report, China, the largest foreign holder of U.S. Treasury securities, reduced its holdings for a third month, from 1.2721 trillion dollars in March to 1.2632 trillion dollars in April.
Japan, the second largest foreign holder of U.S. government debt, increased its holdings from 1.2002 trillion dollars in the previous month to 1.2097 trillion dollars in April.
