China announced it will speed up renovation and construction of urban roads and bridges in order to improve traffic safety.
China's urban roads spanned 336,000 kilometers with 60,000 bridges at the end of 2013, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development on Monday.
However, rapid urbanization and expansion has been followed by an increase in accidents, such as bridge collapses and road cave-ins, revealing problems in both project quality and daily management, according to the ministry.
According to the ministry, relevant departments should take action to deal with the maintenance of urban roads and bridges, and renovation projects should be finished by the end of 2015.
