Poly Film Investment Co Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Hong Kong-listed Poly Culture Group Corp Ltd, launched its first internally developed Imax projection screen in cooperation with Beijing Megabox movie theater in Sanlitun on Tuesday.
The Imax projection system, known as PolyMax, was first introduced to market in June of 2013 at the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival.
This is Poly's seventh PolyMax screen in operation, but the first one in partnership with theaters not owned by Poly.
Liu Debin, general manager of Poly Film Investment Co Ltd, said that by the end of this year, there will be 10 PolyMax screen in operation on the Chinese mainland.
So far, the giant-screen market in China has been dominated by IMAX Corp, the world's leading giant-screen theater operator, but domestic rivals have emerged in recent years, including China Giant Screen and PolyMax.
"All of the intellectual property rights of PolyMax projection system are owned by our company, and there will never be concerns about possible lawsuit filed against us on this issue," said Liu.
Last year, IMAX Corp once sued GDC Technology Ltd, one of the co-developers of China Giant Screen for using what it claimed are stolen trade secrets tied to the large-screen digital movie projection and conversion systems.
