China's major Shanghai stock index plunged by nearly 3 percent shortly after a weak opening on Tuesday.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell as much as 2.96 percent minutes after opening 1.35 percent lower at 3,085.08 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index opened at 10,549.98 points, down 0.55 percent, or 58.54 points.
