Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi is reported to have accepted a marriage proposal from her boyfriend, Chinese rock star Wang Feng. Wang had a flying white drone, a product of Shenzhen-based DJI Technology, carry the ring to Zhang at her birthday party on Saturday.
DJI's founder Wang Tao confirmed that the drone used in the proposal is a Phantom 2 Vision Plus.
DJI is a Chinese technology company that produces commercial and recreational unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). It has grown from a single small office in 2006 to a global workforce of nearly 2,500.
In 2013, DJI's sales soared to 800 million yuan ($127.92 million), a nearly 80-fold increase from three years earlier. In 2010, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology invested 2 million yuan in Wang Tao's team.
Currently, drones are being used by a huge variety of sectors, such as forest fire prevention, observing disaster-hit areas, in broadcast journalism, emergency medical delivery and vegetation observation.
According to a report by China Securities, the annual global demand for unmanned aerial vehicles is expected to almost double from $6.4 billion in 2015 to $11.5 billion by 2024, with public-sector sales expected to account for 14 percent of the total by then.
