Shanghai (CNS) -- Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) announced Friday that the container throughput of Shanghai Port in 2011 has set a new world record as the first port to reach 30 million base boxes.
Shanghai is expected to maintain its championship since in 2010 it prevailed over Singapore Port for the first time.
China's first mainland port for container liners has been developing dramatically since it was put into operation in 1978, noted Chen Xuyuan, chairman of SIPG. It entered the world's top ten in 1998, and obtained the double crown for goods and container throughputs in 2010.
An insider credits the prosperous and stable Chinese economy for Shanghai Port successfully resisting the negative influence of the global recession in the shipping market.
