Beijing (CNS) – Xu Huayang is from Taiwan and currently majoring in law at Renmin University of China – a decision that raised doubts from his friends but is being supported by his parents, he says.
Xu says the decision was made after careful consideration, and that studying in the mainland provides a precious chance to experience more things than staying in Taiwan.
Eight mainland universities sent offers to Xu in 2011, but he finally chose Renmin University based on the reputation of its law school. Xu says he has adapted to campus life there and is enrolled in a number of clubs and associations. He is also dating a girl from Hong Kong thanks to the student exchange program.
However, Xu worries about the difference between attitudes among enterprises in Taiwan and the mainland. For example, Renmin University is respected in the mainland, he says, but not in Taiwan. Nevertheless, the mainland's huge market means more career opportunities, he adds.
Xu is now preparing for the term examinations, and speculates that more Taiwanese students will come in the future.
