Beijing (CNS) -- The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention received 73 reports of public hygiene incidents caused by food poisoning in the third quarter of 2011, announced the Ministry of Health on Thursday.
The cases involved 3,224 poisonings and 61 deaths, mainly caused by poisonous flora and fauna, mushrooms or chemical food additives.
There were fewer cases than the same period in 2010, the ministry said, most of which happened during family meals. The number was also lower at dining service units such as canteens and restaurants.
Most of the poisonings were attributed to bacteria caused by hot and humid weather in summer, when microbial contamination happens most.
The ministry stressed its determination to improve food safety knowledge and the preventive skill of medical workers, as well as to publicize awareness of food safety among the public.
