Inherent problems with Hainan: acting governor

Haikou (CNS) – China's tourist island province of Hainan "has many inherent problems that need swift and decisive remedies," insists its acting governor Jiang Dingzhi.

According to the Report on the Work of the Hainan Provincial Government delivered by Jiang on February 8, the jurisdiction has created itself a GDP of 251.53 billion yuan according to 2011 statistics, 12 percent up over 2010. Disposable income per capita for urban residents was calculated at 18,369 yuan and the net income per capita of rural residents at 6,446 yuan, representing a year-on-year increase of 11.8 percent and 13.4 percent respectively.

However, Jiang says the indexes are not as good as expected. The slow-down of the domestic and world economies, the central government's enhanced macro control over the housing market, and the wringers introduced by natural disasters are all factors that have adversely affected the healthy growth of the local economy.

But Jiang has fingered a series of problems more deeply rooted in the development of Hainan Province. He points out the local economy depends primarily on tourism, and its economic diversity is not robust enough to withstand the range of risks to which today's societies are increasingly prone. In addition, the income of urban and rural residents is still relatively low, so public discontent with medical care, transportation, and the tourism market, to name the main revenue sources, is widespread.

Jiang remains determined, promising, "We will try our best to ensure Hainan people can become better-off overall."
