Jiaxing (CNS) -- Pinghu Middle School in Jiaxing, east China's Zhejiang Province, manages a scholarship program set up in 1998 by the grandmother of the legendary Jeremy Lin, and the family has been regularly funding it for more than a decade now.
Vice-president Zhu Zhongliang of Pinghu Middle School told CNS the story behind the illustrious family's generosity on Thursday.
Jeremy Lin's maternal grandmother Lin Chu A Muen was born in Xincang township of Pinghu, and later migrated to Taiwan and the U.S.
Her fondness for the family's hometown has never waned. Every year since, the school has awarded 20 excellent students with her scholarship. So far, a total of about US$ 28,000 has been used to encourage 280 eager beavers over the last 14 years.
Lin's parents took over the noble duty in 2008, as Lin Chu was getting on in years.
Jeremy Lin, his parents and younger brother all convened to honor their ancestor on May 28 last year, and played a game of basketball with the students.
Recalling a talk they once had, Vice President Zhu said Lin was very courteous and "we are so proud of him for what he has achieved."
