Chongqing (CNS) -- One well-preserved underground chamber, an underground passage, and transferring and lifting equipment have been newly discovered in Yiyuan Garden, one of the former sites of the Chongqing Negotiation, a significant event in China's contemporary history which took place in 1945.
A restoration project initiated by the local authority on April 18 hopes to return the chambers to the original look. The two-floor villa is done in the Gothic style and covers an area of nearly 900 square meters.
Yiyuan Residence, established in the Yuzhong District of Chongqing in 1937, witnessed a series of historical events besides the Chongqing Negotiation, including the US government-mediated talks between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party in 1946.
The Chongqing Negotiation transpired from August 29 to October 10 in Chongqing City, and during those 43 days, Mao Zedong and Jiang Jieshi met eleven times to discuss the conditions in post-war China. In the end, the negotiations essentially resolved nothing.
