Guangzhou (CNS) -- The Beidou (Compass) Navigation System has been making contributions to the precision, steadiness, and reliability of the whole global navigation network, academician Yang Yuanxi with the Chinese Academy of Sciences told CNS on Wednesday during the 3rd China Satellite Navigation Conference (CSNC).
The scientist holds the view that Beidou will occupy 80 percent of the domestic market, and will scramble for 20 percent of the global share in competition with the U.S. GPS, the Russian GLONASS, and the European Galileo.
Compared with GPS, Beidou is faster in its first positioning and more precise in timing services.
The Beidou system is expected to realize global coverage with five geostationary orbit (GEO) satellites and 30 non-GEO satellites by 2020.
Scientists are also exploring a synthesis chip for mobiles combining the advantages of both Beidou and GPS. Another navigation program for the piscatorial industry in East China Sea will be launched soon this year, Yang added.
