Guangzhou (CNS) -- The Guangzhou government conducted a public consultation process on Tuesday to exchange views with local residents on refuse sorting and the need to build more garbage dumps.

Guangzhou is producing 18,000 tons of waste every day, a volume that is still growing by 7 percent annually, yet only 33 percent of what's collected is properly disposed of, according to the city management authority.

The city's current dumps have almost reached full capacity, and before long the downtown area will be left with 6,000 tons of rubbish that has nowhere to go.

With regard to the dioxin output of garbage disposal, city head Chen Jianhua explained waste landfills let out 70 percent more dioxin than simple incineration.

Guangzhou is building six new refuse incineration power stations across its six districts over the next three years, altogether expected to handle 21,000 tons of waste per day. A system to manage the complete chain of waste disposal steps will be formulated by the end of 2015.
