Zhaoqing (CNS) -- The foundation of what will become China's largest Buddhist ashram was completed on Wednesday, marking the site where Buddha Huineng passed his days in meditation. By completion, the project is expected to cost 1.2 billion yuan (about US$ 188.31 million) and will include an affiliated Zen exhibition zone.

In the township of Huaiji at the intersection of Guangdong, Guangxi and Hunan provinces, the holy man Huineng used to disguise himself as an ordinary person to participate incognito in the daily life of the village, then retreat at nightfall to meditate on a nearby cliff. He lived this double life for 15 years.

Huaiji has collected more than 50 stories about the esteemed monk, built over 30 temples and pavilions in his memory, and named almost 20 places and villages after him.
